Jean-Claude Bélégou Chimeras : The peninsula 2021/2022

 

 

The peninsula was like an island that would have stranded on the mainland, as it is said that a ship runs aground on the sand or crashes against the rocks.

In this way it was a failure, just an embryo, a kind of half-portion of island. It held to the mainland only in a fragile and improbable way by this marshy cord made of polders and marshes, each rainy season, what they called « blanchie » flooded.

Its maritime flanks sometimes sandstoney sometimes sandy opened into an infinite well of light from the open sea at all ends, bottomless and endless, at all its ends.

An ocean of lightning blinding clarity. Everywhere, in all its variations, we came up against water, sea or flooded land, water appeared like a wall, impassable, relentless, drunk.

Hostile, inhospitable, windy and rainy, rough in short. It was there of course that I had to end up failing in my turn, at the end of an endless drift, as if panicked....
