Primitives (1969/1972)

`Jean-Claude Bélégou 1969/1974 les années d'initation

'In 1969 Jean-Claude Bélégou began to photograph regularly and from 1970 onwards devoted himself to a work of plastic creation. In 1971 he participated in the reflection group on cinema at the Cinema Unit of the Maison de la Culture in Le Havre, and directed a very short 16 mm film. At the same time, he was active in the leftist movement of May 68, the time of political illusions, and pursued studies in philosophy and Art History/archaeology at Paris I. Specialized in aesthetics, master's thesis on photography in 1976. D.E.A. in Philosophy Paris I Sorbonne.

On the fringes of his generation, carried by American photography, refusing the neo-positivist avatar of the documentary style as much as the leftist heritage of humanist photography, seeking on the side of duration rather than the "decisive moment", it is in the frozen of the "primitives" of nineteenth-century photography and in the German photography of the 20s (Bauhaus, Neue Sehen but also Neue Sachlickheit and August Sander) that we must look for his first photographic shocks. But he was marked at least as much by painting, poetry and literature.
